Algarve reaches Record Wine Production in 2024

22 January, 2025

According to the Barlavento newspaper, the Algarve produced almost 2 million litres of wine in 2024, a 20% increase in production compared to 2023, according to Sara Silva, the president of the Algarve Wine Commission (CVA), which is the entity that has been certifying wines with the Denomination of Origin Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa and Tavira and the Algarve Geographical Indication since 2012.

The CVA's records show that this is one of the best results in the last 15 years, which can be explained by the increase in the number of wine growers in the Algarve region.

The president said that in the Algarve, there has been a great evolution in white wines, in line with what consumers are looking for, and rosés and sparkling wines have also been a great bet, since wine is sold in the region mainly in the summer, during the high season. As far as red wines are concerned, production has been maintained in parallel with the development that the region has seen, in a sustainable way.

As for Negra Mole, it's exclusive to the Algarve and more and more producers have identified it as an opportunity, as even the sparkling wines of this variety have had a great expression, which was a surprise because there was no history of it, according to Sara Silva, who added: ‘I would say that, increasingly, the region is very much associated with its flagship variety, its identity variety, which has very interesting characteristics to be worked on.’
